A new marina is to be constructed in Serbia’s capital Belgrade by UAE-based company Emaar Properties. The investment will be carried out as part of a major construction project, dubbed Belgrade on water (Beograd na vodi).

Mayor of Belgrade Sinisa Mali told local broadcaster TV B92 that construction works on the project are to be launched by the end of June.

Located in the capital’s central part, the Belgrade-based project is to comprise office and apartment blocks, eight hotels, the largest shopping mall in the Balkans, as well as a 200m-high tower resembling Dubai’s Burj Khalifa.

Belgrade is located at the confluence of the Danube and Sava rivers.

In total, Emaar Properties is aiming to spend between €2.5bn (US$2.8bn) and €2.8bn (US$3.1bn) on its investment in Belgrade, according to Mohamed Alabbar, the company’s chairman. The project is expected to create as much as 20,000 jobs.

Emaar Properties says that its Dubai Marina is fitted with a total development area of 50 million sq ft, and it has a large canal spanning 3.5km offering access to the sea from both ends. The facility is fitted with a total of 533 berths.
