A British 22-year-old sailor has been left in a coma after falling from 81m Kibo, which was moored in the Majorcan resort of Puerto Portals at the time. The third assistant engineer fell into the water as he was cleaning the yacht’s hull and was apparently hit by his harness and seat.
Mallorca Magazin reports that the captain put on diving equipment to recover the crewmember from the seabed where he was found at a depth of 18m, 30m away from the yacht itself. It is thought he had been submerged for several minutes before the alarm was raised. Once recovered, he was taken to Son Espases Hospital in Palma.
According to local press the crewmember is still in a ‘vegetative state’. Several sources have indicated that the captain is being questioned by a local magistrate as part of an ongoing investigation into the accident.
