New yacht will be a larger version of the 61m (201ft) trimaran 'White Rabbit Echo', built by North West Bay Ships in Tasmania in 2005.

A new 83m (273ft) White Rabbit superyacht project is underway, sources of SB‘s sister title IBI in Australia and Singapore have confirmed. The new yacht will be a larger version of the 61m (201ft) trimaran White Rabbit Echo, built by North West Bay Ships in Tasmania in 2005.

The exact location of the build is not known at this time. However, information supplied suggests that a build facility has been set up just for the construction of this latest WR project. A spokesman for Sam Sorgiovanni, the leading Australian designer who did the interior design of the 2005 superyacht, told IBI that he is also involved in this project. Sorgiovanni is currently travelling, understood to be in Europe where he is working on two Oceanco projects of 110m (361ft) and 88m (289ft).

In a break with the traditional confidentiality associated with superyacht projects, the owner of four White Rabbit yachts over the past 25 years is known to be Goh Cheng Liang, one of Singapore’s richest people. In the 2013 Forbes list of Singapore’s 50 richest people he was listed as number 7 with a fortune of $3.2bn. His business interests range across a number of areas but specially have involved a long-term involvement with Nippon Paints.

It is also known that the WR project build team considered a number of yards for the build. These included Pride Mega Yachts at Yantai in northern China. There has been four White Rabbits as follows so far, with this information from industry analyst Malcolm Wood:

White Rabbit A – built 1989 – 38.10m – Feadship de Vries, Aalsmeer

White Rabbit B – built 1995 – 49.40m – Feadship de Vries, Aalsmeer

White Rabbit C – built 2001 – 36.00m – Image Marine, Henderson Western Australia

White Rabbit E – built 2005 – 61.45m – North West Bay Ships, Margate, Tasmania

There was no White Rabbit D.

It is possible this new project could be the largest yacht ever built in Australia, although an 83m is also in build at Silver Yachts in Henderson.
