Since Babcock Marine, the operator of Devonport naval dockyard, announced last October that it would not bid for any more yacht projects, a question mark has hung over its Devonport Yachts arm as to whether the business had a future. SB now understands that a private investor has put up the funding to keep the company operational and that the company will be relaunched at the Monaco Yacht Show in late September.
According to industry sources, part of this relaunch includes the formation of a new company, reportedly called Devonport Yachts Ltd, and that the yard will be relocated to a new site. So far there has been no confirmation of where that new site will be, though one possible location could be the Appledore Shipyard on the north Devon coast which is owned by Babcock. The facilities there include a covered building dock of 118mx33m as well as a 80x20m slipway. It is believed that some, if not all, of the present Devenport management team will continue with the company.
