A major new facility has opened at the Norfolk, Virginia, shipyard of US builder Colonna Shipyard, which will be available for use by superyachts.

Its specialist Colonna Yachts division, which takes on repair and refit company, now has the benefit of using a new ten acre zone known as the West Yard. Depending on the size of vessels, it can accommodate up to 15 vessels at a time.

The main feature of the West Yard is a 1,000t travel lift which was partly funded by a $825,000 grant through the ‘Assistance To Small Shipyards Program’ operated by the US Maritime Administration.

The infrastructure also includes two 99m (325ft) concrete slipway piers and a lay-up berth with full utility servicing and crane availability for side-to loading.

A second grant of $1.963m from the program has been used to invest in increasing the yard’s environmental capabilities.
