The 1st annual Future of Marinas and Refit Facilities conference will take place this year in Malta from October 20-21.
According to event organiser Quaynote Communications, speakers will include Stuart Carruthers, cruising manager at the Professional Yachtsmen’s Association (PYA), Roberto Perocchio, chairman of ASSOMARINAS, Sam Bourne, CEO of the Yacht Harbour Association, and Karl Vella, legal advisor at the Ministry for Resources and Rural Affairs in Malta.
Issues to be debated will include how to create efficient use of space for marina development; the relationship between marinas and refit facilities; environmental law and marina operations; why lenders are reluctant to lend money for berths and marinas; alternative fundraising mechanisms for marina developments; and what the marina industry can learn from tourism and hotel industries.
“We are delighted at how many local companies in Malta have backed the conference by agreeing to sponsor, speak or exhibit,” says conference director Lorna Titley. “There has also been a lot of interest from outside companies wanting to find out more about what the country has to offer in terms of yachting and marina services.”
She continues: “This is good news for Malta as it seeks to further develop its position as a yacht destination and attract inward investment into its tourism-based economy.”
