UK-based composites specialist, STRUCTeam Ltd, based on the Isle of Wight, has won the contract to engineer the composite structures for the first 30m (98ft) Wally Cento sailing yacht.
The Judel Vrolijk-designed yacht is currently under construction at Green Marine’s UK facility in Hythe.
Due for launch in the spring of 2012, the yacht’s lines are taken from the latest racing yachts, with reduced displacement, a powerful sail plan, moveable ballast and improved stability.
The boats are being designed to surf and plane, and are capable of downwind speeds of more than 25kt.
“The structural design is a critical element for the success of this new class of yacht and we are happy to have been selected for this task,” says STRUCTeam engineering director Julien Sellier. “Our structural design will utilise advanced composites including various modulus carbon fibres and advanced honeycomb materials.
“Our aim is to deliver a structure at the minimum weight whilst providing the expected level of reliability.”
Founded in May 2010, STRUCTeam Ltd is a composites structural engineering and supply chain advice business that serves the wind blade and yachting industries. The company operates from a 1,500ft2 office within Cowes Yacht Haven.
