Following the implementation of fishing restrictions and limited fishing licenses in Turkey, fishing-boat builders are seeking alternative income sources by producing yachts and different types of workboats.

One of Turkey’s largest builders of fishing boats, Basaran Gemi on the Black Sea, has started to build a 43m (141ft) superyacht for a Turkish client. It has been custom-designed and is due for launch next year.

Zafer Basaran, the shipyard’s founder, says the company is entering the market with more than 30 years’ experience in steel working.

The Basaran Gemi yard spans 13,000m2, with a 1,500m2 enclosed area, and produces fishing boats, ferries and special purpose vessels for Turkish and international clients from Greece, Algeria and Denmark.

Fishing restrictions in Turkey will be implemented in 2016 to protect fish stocks in Turkish waters.
